Just thought I would share with you a pic of a plane that one of my wood suppliers who is a cabinet maker by trade owns, he has a paasion for collecting and trading in fine tools.

It is hand made by Karl Holtey.

Thought some of you might appreciate it.

Thanks, Colin--that maker's planes sure are pretty tools. Scary expensive to go with your "scary sharp" system!

RussellR...Is your friend the same cabinet maker who had this one listed on ebay? It fetched over 5K I believe! Brazilian Rwd at that...I thought the name was Wayne though, but I don't recall. It was about a month ago.

What a fine work of art...I wonder if he uses it. It just looks too pristine!

Rich

I'm not sure, he does buy and sell a few, his name is Andy, but his ebay name is Wadkin (After the brand of woodworking machines he uses, could well have been him.

Hi JJ

I asked him and he said he has used it, but it is not in every day use.

Wow!

You know, the original old infill planes by Spiers and Norris and especially those by more unknown but equally good (I'm told, I have never held an infill plane) makers can be bought for a fraction of that.

Unbelievably beautiful planes but those prices

The jointer was made by Wayne Anderson, I believe. He is well known over at the dangerous "WoodNet" forum. Someday, I'm going to try to make an infill similar to those. Recently got a nice little 618 Atlas lathe. Just need to find a small mill and some talent. MT

Doh! My mind temporarily (I hope) left my body. Sorry, sorry, sorry!!!

BTW, I don't think you Brits all look alike at all. You all sound the same, though.

Guess its the same as Guitars, at the very high end the sky is the limit.

Very pretty work. How does the sole attach to the sides? It looks like a kind of finger joint. Using different metals accentuates the interlocking. Do you suppose it is welded or just a press fit.

Mmm....infill planes. Several places make kits you can 'do' yourself for a few hundred bucks (between 3 and 4, mostly), and I keep half and eye on eBay for a nice infill. I think the joints are double dovetails of some sort; google infill plane kits, and you'll get a few reviews/step by step pictorials that are quite revealing.

Those top-end expensive tools are a bit ridiculous, though, because I'd bet good money most don't get used with any regularity. Just hoarded by collectors. Thing is, with those prices, I'd probably do the same; nice little insurance policy.

Still, gorgeous tools. Steve Knight makes a modern-lined infill that looks pretty darn sweet, and costs a tenth of all that.

Russell, This guy down in Devon I think makes great top end planes. You can sometimes pick up old Norris and Spiers realtively cheaply on eBay if you don't mind doing a bit of work on them.

Hey, you are really honoured to me mistaken for me Russell, especially as I'm so much younger than you!
